Shooting Range Legislation, Cleveland Clinic & Audi on Planning Commission's Agenda

Lake National Bank and Melt also have items up for consideration

The Mentor Planning Commission has a lengthy agenda waiting for it when its members meet 7 p.m. today at City Hall.

Moreover, that agenda has some high-profile businesses on it.

For example, the at the southeast corner of Norton Parkway and Center Street be rezoned from a "lifestyle center" designation to a "medical campus."

A "medical campus" zone can be used for diverse reasons, said Ron Traub, the city of Mentor's director of business and economic development.

It can include everything from physician's offices to a full medical center with a helicopter pad.

The Clinic has been coy about its intentions for the property.

"We are currently in a due diligence process which could position us to acquire land in Mentor," said Heather Phillips, the director of corporate communications for the Clinic. "At this time, no specific decisions have been made regarding potential uses of the land. We look forward to the City Planning Commission’s review later this month."

Also on the agenda:

  • Penske Auto will be presenting its final site plan for the

, Penske is looking to relocate its Willoughby Audi dealership to 8599 Market St., which will bring about 50 jobs to the city and generate about $30 million in sales.

The proposed dealership would be 23,000 square feet and built on a vacant six acres just north of Outback Steakhouse.

  • The Planning Commission will consider proposed changes in the city's code that would allow for a in Mentor.

One resolution recommends a change to allow people to fire a gun in the city -- but only in a commercial indoor shooting range.

The second resolution suggests that such ranges be allowed in the city's industrial zones.

If the Planning Commission approves these amendments, City Council would still need to vote for them before they become law.

  • The Great Lakes Mall has more than one item on the agenda.

First, its newest restaurant -- -- is asking for a permit to allow outdoor dining and drinking.

Additionally, Great Lakes is proposing a new entrance to the mall, which requires approval from the Commission.

  • Melt Bar & Grilled is requesting a conditional use permit for the patio at its new Mentor location, .

Melt does not intend to physically change the patio, which was built by the previous tenant Jalapeño Loco, according to the permit request.
