School Board Recognizes Mentor High Athletes, Academics at Meeting

An eclectic group of students ranging from the speech and debate team to the wrestling and competitive cheerleading teams were recognized at the Mentor Schools Board of Education meeting Tuesday

Mentors Schools Board of Education and administration recognized a varied group of athletes and academics from during the .

Each group got its moment in the spotlight as they were called to the stage for their recent accomplishments.

The honorees include:

  • the , whose Team Rock was the first Mentor High team to make it to the state competition in six years
  • the speech and debate team, which also qualified for its state competition
  • the , which earned fourth place at the state championship despite suffering a series of injuries this season
  • the , which sent five wrestlers (including one alternate) to state
  • the competitive cheerleading team, which qualified for the state competition even though it only formed two years ago
  • Kevin Oravecz, the from Mentor High to ever compete in the state championship
  • the basketball team, which came one game away from winning the district championship. This was the fourth regional playoffs team Mentor has produced in four years.

The Mentor basketball team thanked Mentor Schools Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes by giving her a bouquet and mementos from their season.

The school board also remembered at their meeting. Waterman was a past president of the Ohio PTA and a founder of the Mentor Schools Foundation.

The library at will be renamed in her honor.

The board for Riverside High School Principal William Wade to replace the retiring Mentor High Principal Joe Spiccia at the end of the school year.
