Mentor Students Team With Seniors To Spread 'Whirled' Peace

Rice Elementary School students worked with residents from nearby Salida Woods Assisted Living to participate in Pinwheels for Peace

Students from Rice Elementary School have paired with the residents of Salida Woods Assisted Living to participate in Pinwheels for Peace.

Last week, several art classes from Rice went to Salida Woods to create pinwheels. The pinwheels are intended as a symbol of childhood.

In the words of the organizers of Pinwheels for Peace, "(The pinwheel) reminds us of a time when things were simple, joyful, peaceful.

Pinwheels for Peace was started in 2005 by two Florida art teachers and is now an international project intended to promote world peace.

Furthermore, making these pinwheels allowed both the students and seniors make some new friends.

Last Friday, on International Day of Peace 2012, a group of Rice Elementar students went back to Salida Woods to plant their pinwheels in the its frony lawn.

The students joined millions of other people across the world in their simple reminder of “whirled” peace.
