Mentor Sports Hall of Hall Inducts Tenth Class

Standout teams, players and coaches from football, volleyball, track, golf and more are admitted as part of tenth class

The Mentor Sports Hall of Fame inducted its 2011 class, its tenth overall, this September.

It included standout players, coaches and teams from the school district's storied sports history, according to the Mentor Schools website.

The inductees include:

  • George Polinsky, who coached boys golf at from 1980 to 2010. His teams won the Greater Cleveland Conference 11 times and the Lake Erie League 14 times.
  • Rich Woodman, who coached both volleyball and girls track for more than 20 years. He received several coaching awards during is tenure, including winning Greater Cleveland Conference Coach of the Year six times.
  • Dianne Beatty won seven varsity letters before she graduated in 1992. She was recognized by the Greater Cleveland Conference repeatedly for her skill in softball, volleyball and basketball.
  • Mike Damon, class of 1988, was a 3-time state qualifier in cross country, as well part of the 1985 state championship team, and 3,200-meter district champion in track.
  • Marcy Haluska, class of 1989, a district champion and 2-time Greater Cleveland Conference in volleyball. She continued to play the sport at the University of Akron and was recently added to its sports hall of fame, as well.
  • Dustin Kirby, who started for the Mentor High soccer team for four years and won the scholar-athlete award every year until he graduated in 2003. He moved on to play for Ohio State University and Real Salt Lake in the Major Soccer League.
  • David Krofchek, a 3-time letter award winner in football and baseball. In the history of Mentor High baseball, Krofcheck has the second most triples, third most steals and fourth most runs scored.
  • Michelle Mackinnon, class of 1995, who amassed 10 varsity letters in volleyball, softball and basketball. She played on three district champion teams and won Plain Dealer Athlete of the Year in softball.
  • Jennifer Metz, who was a 2-time Lake Erie League champion and 3-time district champion in volleyball. She was named first team All-Ohio during her senior year in 2001.
  • Jennifer Pepka, class of 1999, who like Metz was a 3-time letter winner in volleyball. She also excelled at basketball and track. She was first team all-state and district player of the year in 1999.
  • Jeremy Sargent, a rare 4-sport athlete who earned 12 varsity letters before graduating in 2003. He won accolades and championships with the Mentor High soccer, football, basketball and baseball teams.
  • Rob Warren, class of 2001, was named Lake Erie League lineman of the year for his work on both offense and defense. He also placed second in the state in discus and is part of a state-record-holding discuss relay team.
  • the 1998 volleyball team, which won their league, district and region on the way to being state runner up. The team included inductee Pepka and was coached by Woodman.
  • the 2003 football team, who went 10-0 in its regular season and 12-1 overall. They shut out Lakewood and St. Ignatius in playoff victories before losing a close game in overtime to St. Ed's in the regional finals
