Mentor Schools Respond To Rumors Of Threatened Violence At Memorial Middle School

Administrators say the comment that lead to the rumors were made in jest

The Mentor Schools district has responded to rumors that there would be violence today at .

"This rumor has been investigated and the administration has found the origin of the rumor and investigated the rumor thoroughly," Memorial Principal Kathy Burnett said in a statement on its web site. "We found that the statement was made in jest."

The student who began the rumor has been removed from the school.

"We will not tolerate any student making any statements that would make our students feel unsafe or threatened," Burnett said.

School distict spokeswoman Kristin Kirby said the students who brought the rumor to the school's attention did a great job.

"We're proud of the kids who heard something and said something to adults who they trust so the school could address it," she said.

Burnett concluded her online letter by saying, "The tragedy in Chardon has affected all of us, but I want to assure you that we take every precaution necessary to continue to keep Memorial Middle School a safe environment."
