At its annual organizational meeting Tuesday night, the Mentor School Board voted Alan Mihok as its new president. William Shaw was voted the board's new vice president.
Mihok is president of MJK Consulting and lives in Kirtland Hills with his wife and their children. Shaw lives in Mentor with his wife and children and is the chief of the Solon Fire Department.
School Board Members Mary Bryner and Thomas Tuttle were sworn in by Mentor Municipal Court Judge John Trebets. Bryner and Tuttle, who ran unopposed in November, were re-elected to the board by voters during the November election.
In other business, the Mentor School Board was recognized by the students and teachers of . January is Board Recognition Month. The students presented the board with a resolution recognizing the board's contributions to Mentor schools.
Additionally, students from 's and presented with achievement certificates for placing first in the state of Ohio in a worldwide computer-based academic competition in December. Students answered 200 questions in 15 academic fields.
"Accuracy and speed of answers figured into the scoring," said Mentor Schools Assistant Superintendent William Porter. "Memorial was not only first in Ohio but finished 44th nationally. We should also mention that finished eighth in the state and finished 19th.
The student team members are Daniel Crough, Joy Mason, Thomas Cromes, Nicholas Clason, Christopher Nguyen, Ruchin Patel, Venkat Suru, Joshuya Furness, Wayne Hou and Omar Mansour.

I read the story about the Knowledge Masters competition. I was very proud to hear that my son's team had received first place in the state, but when I saw this article I did not see his name (Wayne Hou, of Memorial Middle) mentioned.
