Lake Catholic Students Play Kickball to Support Cancer

Lake Catholic High School students helped raise more than $50,000 to support cancer research and had a day's worth of fun in the process.

The school hosted its second annual Kick it for Cancer event Friday, letting the competitive juices flow, but never forgetting the cause at hand. About 400 students comprised 41 teams for the event and they all donned T-shirts with the figures of six classmates who have a form of cancer.

John Ellis, a Lake Catholic teacher who heads a class on leadership, said seniors and juniors collaborated on organizing the event and secured funds from private donors like Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center.

Lake Catholic will send seven teams that raised $3,000 or more to the Cleveland Indians Kick-It event on June 27 at Progressive Field for donors across the region to fight pediatric and adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer.
