Area Athletes Gear Up For A Big Weekend

Wrestlers, gymnasts & bowlers go to states; boys and girls basketball playoffs continue

This weekend is the culmination for what many high school athletes in winter sports have been working toward all season.

Wrestlers, gymnasts and bowlers all have their state championships -- and many athletes from schools in Mentor will be competing.

  • The wrestling tournament will last all weekend in Columbus.

Two wrestlers, Jordan Victor and Colin Kramer, qualified to compete and a third, Warren Ashton, will be there as an alternate.

Four Lake Catholic wrestlers -- Brad Taton, Anthony Tutolo, Sean Fee and Jimmy Szep -- also will be competing at states

  • The Mentor gymnastics team is also competing at states today in Columbus.

They qualified by earning second place . Cardinal gymnast Kayla Kosmerl is on an especially hot streak. She was the all-around champion at districts and .

Rachel Gurley is also competing as an individual.

  • The boys basketball team will compete today for a state title, as well. The team members are , Ryan Parr, Brandon Poplstein, Tom Bumbarger and Cameron Sullivan.
  • Meanwhile, the boys and girls basketball teams from Mentor and continue their playoff runs.

The Mentor boys play Shaw tonight in Euclid. , notching Coach Bob Krizancic's 500th career win with Mentor.

The Lake Catholic boys basketball team will also play their section final tonight against Conneaut in Ashtabula.

The against Glenville Saturday afternoon in Perry.

Finally, the Lake Catholic girls will play their district final against Geneva Saturday in Andover.
