State Approves Mentor's Plan To Build Breakwall By Mentor Lagoons

The intended breakwall would prevent further erosion at Mentor Lagoons' beach

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has approved the city of Mentor's plan to build a 500-foot stone breakwall that would prevent more erosion from the Mentor Lagoons' beach.

Since 2004, that stretch of bluffs has lost about 200 feet, said Bob Martin, the city of Mentor's director of parks and recreation.

Consequently, the city has proposed to build the breakwall that will protect the shoreline from the across the .

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has already approved the plan.

Martin hopes the construction of the wall will begin this fall, before Lake Erie can do another winter's worth of damage.

The wall is expected to cost about $225,000, which the city will pay.
