Poll: Should City Council Vote On Sheetz?

Should City Council weigh in on the proposed Sheetz service station at Eckley's Corner

At City Council's most recent meeting, a couple of residents asked them to vote on the proposed Sheetz gas station at 7766 Lake Shore Blvd..

Before I continue, some back story:

Sheetz has been trying to put a service station at the empty Eckley's Corners for years. Two years ago, Planning Commission approved a permit for it.

However, the City Council at the time called up the decision -- as they have the power to do -- and voted 4-3 against it.

Since then, three of the people who voted against the Sheetz station have left council.

Consequently, Sheetz once again asked for a permit to operate a service station at Eckley's Corner earlier this year -- this time with a few modifications. Planning Commission once again approved the permit unanimously.

However, the plan still has its opponents and proponents. The proponents are happy to see a vacant building occupied and another business in the city. But the opponents are concerned about traffic and the presence of a service station in a residential neighborhood.

If City Council chooses not to vote on the Sheetz station, then the Planning Commission's decision will stand.

The council members have the power to call up the decision and vote on it. The question is, "Should they?"

What do you think?
