Mentor Library Marks Best-Ever Summer Reading Program

Kids read or were read to for nearly 18,000 hours

The Mentor Public Library has reported its best-ever summer reading program.

During the program, 1,440 children logged 17,364 hours of reading or being read to, and over 600 kids earned yard signs for being a Library Champion — logging 15 or more hours.

The previous record was set in 2012, with 1,300 and over 13,000 hours.

In addition, 434 adults and 209 teens joined the program, reading 2,516 and 1,214 books, respectively — also beating all previous records.

“Our goal for the summer reading program was not to increase the number of readers but to increase the number of hours read,” said Children’s Services Manager Kim Sidorick. “We are very happy with the results. Kids increased the number of hours read by almost 25 percent.”
