Mentor City Council Approves Special Prosecutor in Schneider OVI Trial

Council hired John O'Donnell to serve as special prosecutor in former State Rep. Mark Schneider's OVI trial

Mentor City Council voted to hire John O'Donnell as a special prosecutor in former State Rep. Mark Schneider's drunk driving case Tuesday evening.

Council approved O'Donnell's appointment to avoid a conflict of interest.

Mentor City Prosecutor Lisa Klammer donated to Schneider's successful campaign to serve on the Ohio House of Representatives in 2008 and his unsuccessful re-election bid in 2010, Mentor Law Director Richard Hennig said.

Hennig said he also donated to Schneider's campaign in 2008.

, who lives in Mentor, Jan. 17. An officer pulled him over for changing lanes without signaling, Mentor Police Lt. Tom Powers said.

The officer suspected that Schneider was drunk because his eyes were red and glassy, his speech slurred, and he had the scent of alcohol on his breath, Powers said.

Schneider refused to take a Breathalyzer or any field sobriety tests.
