City Of Mentor V. Facebook

Facebook has forced the city of Mentor's government to change the name of its Facebook page

Facebook has forced the city of Mentor to change the name of its Facebook page and the city doesn't like it.

The Mentor government created the page City of Mentor, Ohio more than two years ago.

A few weeks ago, the city received an email from Facebook saying the name of the page does not meet the requirements for its geographic location policy.

"It has always been our position that geographic page names such as 'City of Palo Alto' do not sufficiently inform the user about what page they are connecting to and who administers that page (i.e.: Is it the mayor, city council, tourism/travel board, etc?)" Facebook said.

Kathie Pohl -- the public information officer for Mentor's government and administrator of its Facebook page -- thinks it is clear who runs the City of Mentor, Ohio and what it represents.

"We don't believe our residents are confused about who they are connecting to -- we identify ourselves on the site as being a government agency, the number of likes has grown steadily over the past 2 years to nearly 1,000 and folks haven't had any problems posting questions and comments directed to the city," she said.

The city posted on its Facebook page, "Facebook wants us to change the name of our site because they believe it may confuse users. Are you confused? Is it clear to you that this is the site of the City of Mentor, Ohio?"

The post has garnered more than 100 "likes" and more than 60 comments of support.

Pohl also commented on the city's Facebook page, "We told (Facebook) we are the geographic location and are pretty sure that by identifying our site at the top of the page as a "government agency" that folks aren't confusing us with some other geographic place by the name of Mentor."

On Friday, Facebook changed the name of the city's page to City of Mentor, Ohio - Municipal Government.

Afterward, Pohl said the new name "shouldn't change how people find us."
