City Council Votes To Expand 2012 Road Repair Program

Mentor will spend an additional $300,000 on asphalt and concrete repairs

Mentor City Council voted to expand its 2012 road repair program during its meeting Tuesday at .

Mentor's extensive road repair program cost the city less than expected, so the city's administration recommended spending the unanticipated windfall on additional concrete and asphalt repairs for Mentor's roads.

City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said it made sense to do extra repairs now because the price of asphalt is linked to the price of petroleum. Consequently, it's possible that asphalt's cost could spike in the future.

"It's likely that this time next year, we won't be able to receive as favorable a bid," Filipiak said to Council.

The first contract pays an additional $190,000 to Chagrin Valley Paving for the asphalt resurfacing of Old Johnnycake Ridge Road, Crossfield Avenue (west of Broadmoor) and Culver Boulevard.

Additionally, Chagrin Valley will also do full-depth asphalt repairs on Jackson Street.

The contract pays TC Construction Company an additional $101,500 for 1,750 more square yards of concrete work.

The concret work will be done on Aspenwood, Cannon Ridge, Canterbury, Catalpa Circle, Curberry, Foxwood, Gatewood, Norwood, Pinewood, Ramblewood, Snowberry and Yellowwood.

Filipiak noted that the warm weather has allowed construction crews to begin the road repairs early this year.

"This is probably the earliest we've started in years," he said.
