Bond Issuances and Sales Approved at City Council Meeting

Council also received an update on the petroleum spill resulting from Monday's tractor trailer fire

Mentor City Council approved a series of ordinances that would .

The bonds, in turn, will allow the city to pay for several projects, including:

  • the Plaza Boulevard extension, which would give drivers a way to get from Tyler Boulevard to Great Lakes Mall without going through busy Mentor Avenue intersections at Reynolds Road or Center Street.
  • an expansion of the Mentor Police Station, which is on hold at the moment for financial reasons, Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said.
  • .
  • improvements that would increase energy efficiency in several city-owned buildings
  • stormwater drainage improvements near the Newell Creek development.

Council members also received an update from Mentor Fire Chief Richard Harvey on the cleanup efforts in Mentor and the ensuing spill of the trailer's chemical payload.

The chief said some of the petroleum-based chemicals that came from the trailer spilled into a water basin near Steeplechase Drive. Firefighters had put booms in place to stop the chemicals from spreading farther downstream.

Unfortunately, the city received about a half-inch of rain Monday, causing the chemicals to flow over the booms.

However, Harvey said the authorities were able to contain the overflow by setting up more containment booms and siphon dams.

The chemicals are being removed by vacuum trucks that siphon the chemicals from the top of the water.

"The progress is much better today because we haven't had significant rainfall," Harvey told council.

Finally, at the meeting, Filipiak informed council that a pickleball court had opened at . Pickleball is a modified form of tennis.
