Woman Convicted Of Driving Drunk, Causing 6-Car Crash

A 72-year-old woman was convicted of driving drunk and causing a 6-car crash.

Doris Wass of Mentor pleaded no contest Monday morning in Mentor Municipal Court and Judge John Trebets found her guilty.

Wass's sentencing date has not been scheduled yet. However, when she is sentenced, she could receive any punishment from community control to six months in Lake County Jail.

In the meanwhile, Trebets also ordered Wass to pay restitution to the other drivers who were affected by the crash.

On March 26, Wass was driving south on Heisley just north of the intersection with Tyler Boulevard when she lost control of her Kia Forte, Mentor Police Sgt. Mike Majernik .

First, Wass hit the curb on her right side. Then she swerved back and hit another car in the side. Next she drove between a Dodge Neon and Honda Civic, sideswiping them both, Majernik said.

Finally, her Forte rear ended a Chevrolet Silverado -- which was, in turn, pushed into a GMC Envoy, Majernik said.

Though nobody was seriously hurt in the crash, the drivers of the Neon and Civic were taken to TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township as a safety precaution.

Wass was uninjured.

She told police she drank half a beer before leaving her house. She consented to taking a Breathalyzer test but would not do it correctly, Majernik said.

This is Wass's first conviction for drunken driving.
