Tree Falls on Car But No One Injured As Sandy Wrecks Havoc

A falling tree landed on a moving car heading down State Route 84 early Tuesday morning, but none of the occupants was injured as Mentor battled through damage caused by superstorm Sandy.

A large pine tree came crahsing down on a 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo at 5:24 a.m. Tuesday on State Route 84-Johnnycake Ridge Road.

The two occupants, one from Chesterland and the other from Mentor, were able to walk out of the car; neither was hurt, Mentor Police Lt. Ken Zbiegien said.

State Road 84 has been blocked off in both directions as the tree pulled down power cables, with some of them lying on top of the car.

Zbiegien said no deaths or injuries have been caused by the storm, which had its greatest impact overnight Monday. No significant flooding has occurred, but the city’s creeks have risen.

Zbiegien said several roads have been closed, including Steeplechase Drive and a portion of Tyler Blvd. near Corporate Blvd.  A high-power line has been swinging in the breeze and setting off sparks on Tyler.

Other roads include:

• Plains Road, between Collins Road and Galaxie Drive, is closed off with a large tree down and wires in the road.
• Hopkins Road, between Rushton Drive and Lakeshore Blvd., is closed off with wires across the roadway.
• A small portion of Fairview Avenue off State Road 84 has been blocked off by police because of downed trees and power lines.

Also, Headlands Beach State Park didn’t have power for a time, but it has been restored, Zbiegien said.
