1. Usually, we begin these recaps with the bad news. This week, let's start with some lighter fare.

Mentor Public Library has decided to join the monster mash with its first ever zombie invasion, dubbed Z-Day.

Teens are invited to the Z-Day 2012 Celebration, which will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at the library's main branch.

2. The November election is creeping closer.

3. November 2 -- in case you're wondering when the Melt in Mentor is opening.

4. This week, the mothers and grandmothers of our Moms Council talked about what steps they take to make sure their kids don't get in trouble on social networking sites.

5. After seven hours of deliberation Thursday, the jury decided the Joseph Thomas -- -- should receive the death penalty.

Thomas, 28, did not react when he heard the decision.

However, the jury's verdict does not necessarily mean Thomas will be sentenced to death.

Lake County Court of Common Pleas Judge Richard L. Collins will make the final decision as to what Thomas' sentence will be 3 p.m. on Oct. 15.

Collins could also sentence Thomas to 25 years to life in prison, 30 years to life in prison or life without the possibility of parole, as opposed to the death penalty.
