Suspects Arrested in Home Savings Bank Robbery

Raymond Spears 22, and Theodore Crawford, 21, both of Cleveland, were arrested earlier this month and indicted by a federal grand jury. Spears faces two federal counts of armed bank robbery; Crawford faces one.

Spears and Crawford are also accused of robbing the Chase Bank in Lyndhurst four days before the Mentor robbery.

In both robberies, the robber claimed to have a bomb. In Lyndhurst, only one person – thought to be Spears – entered the bank with a fake explosive and demanded money.

In Mentor, two people came into the bank. They each handed the tellers separate notes, claiming to have bombs, and demanded money.

The robbers took more than $3,000 from the bank in Lyndhurst and $6,000 from Mentor bank, according to the indictment.

After the Home Savings Bank robbery, authorities released photos of the robbers. A person called Mentor Police and identified one of the suspects as Spears, Mentor Police Lt. Ken Gunsch said.

From there, investigators – who included members of Mentor Police, Lyndhurst Police, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office and FBI – also identified Crawford as a suspect.

The indictment was presented to the grand jury by Assistant United States Attorney Blas E. Serrano.
