Police: Woman Tossed Stolen Candy, Beer From Car Window

Mentor Police arrested a woman Wednesday morning who is accused of stealing candy, beer and wine from the Speedway gas station in Mentor and, then, tossing the stolen stuff from her car when she saw police approaching.

Sara Lilly, 35, of Painesville, came into the gas station at about 3:30 a.m., Mentor Police Lt. Tim Allen said.

After ten minutes of milling around the aisles, Lilly went to pay for her gas. However, the clerk noticed candy shoved into the waistband of her pants, Allen said.

The clerk told Lilly to stop but she left, instead.

Then the clerk called the police and an officer stopped Lilly's car by the intersection of Heisley Road and Kathleen Drive.

Lilly let police search her car and they found nothing. However, officers then discovered the candy and bottles of Leinenkugl beer and Sutter Home wine on a tree lawn between the gas station and where police stopped Lilly, Allen said.

All totaled, police think Lilly stole $23 worth of candy and alcohol. She was charged with a felony count of tampering with evidence and a misdemeanor count of petty theft.

Lilly was arraigned Wednesday in . Judge John Trebets set her bond at $11,000, which was not posted.

Lilly's next court hearing is scheduled for May 3.
