Police: Teenager Charged With Robbery After Fighting With Security Guard

Christina Askew tried to steal a $70 pair of sneakers from Gabriel Brothers

An 18-year-old woman faces a robbery charge after she scuffled with a security guard while trying to steal shoes Friday from Gabriel Brothers on Market Street, Mentor Police Lt. Ken Zbiegien said.

Christina Askew, of Painesville, was shopping with her mother when Askew tried to swap her shoes for a pair of new Nikes, Zbiegien said. Askew left her old shoes in the box and tried to wear the new ones out of the store.

However, a security guard spotted her and brought her back to the store.

At first, Askew cooperated, though she lied and told the guard she was only 15 years old. However, her mother told the guard her real age.

At this point, Askew tried to run away. When a security guard caught up to her, she repeatedly punched him, Zbiegien said.

The guard was eventually able to restrain her and then police arrived to arrest her.

Askew was charged with robbery and arraigned Monday in Mentor Municipal Court.

Judge John Trebets set her bond at $50,000, which was not posted.

Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

The shoes Aske is accused of trying to steal are worth $70, Zbiegien said.
