Police: Felon Out On Bond Caught With Loaded Gun

A man who has been convicted of felonies and is out on bond for an aggravated robbery charge faces a trio of new weapons charges

A man with a criminal history, who is already out on bond for a charge of aggravated robbery, faces a trio of new weapons charges after he was arrested Monday by Mentor Police.

Tyrell Hurd, 23, of Painesville, was in a car that was pulled over by police for having expired plates, Mentor Police Sgt. Michael Majernik said.

The officer smelled marijuana and asked the driver to step out of the car. The policeman then saw Hurd, the passenger, moving furtively so he asked Hurd to leave the car also, Marjernik said.

The officer searched beneath Hurd's car seat and found a loaded .38 handgun, Majernik said.

Hurd is not legally allowed to have a handgun for two reasons.

One, he is out on bond in an aggravated robbery case that is pending in Lake County Court of Common Pleas.

Two, Hurd is already a convicted felon. In 2007, he was convicted of a theft that also involved a gun. He was sentenced to four years in prison but released after two.

Hurd was charged with a trio of felony weapons charges -- carrying a concealed weapon, improper handling of a firearm and having a weapon while under a disability.

Judge John Trebets arraigned Hurd Tuesday. The judge set his bond at $30,000, which was again posted.

His next court hearing is scheduled for Feb. 21.
