Octogenarian Sentenced To Six Months In Jail For Latest Theft Offense

June Kurtz convicted of theft for fourth time in the last six years.

An 87-year-old woman was sentenced to six months in jail after she racked up her fourth theft conviction in five years and her fifth overall.

June Kurtz, of Chardon, pleaded guilty to a count of petty theft in May. Judge John Trebets sentenced her Wednesday morning to six months in Lake County Jail.

He also fined her $250 and said she could only go shopping if she was with another adult.

When Kurtz is released from jail, she will be on probation for six months. Trebets also also told her to continue her program at Ravenwood Mental Health Center in Geauga County.

Kurtz was arrested most recently April 5 while at Great Lakes Mall. She was first spotted by security in the Dillard's Department Store, police said.

Security recognized her, in part, because Kurtz isn't allowed to be in Dillard's due to a previous shoplifting conviction.

She left Dillard's and went to Macy's where security guards stopped her after she exited the store.

She had $166 worth of women's shirts that she had taken from Macy's on her and another $259 worth of shirts from Dillard's in her car, police said.

Kurtz was convicted of petty theft in 1999, 2006, 2010 and 2011. After her 2011 conviction, she was sentenced to 20 days in jail and 160 on house arrest.
