A Mentor woman is dead and her husband is in the hospital with serious injuries after they were hit by a car while crossing the street Monday in Fort Myers Beach, FL.
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office web site, Robert and Ann Bandy were walking across Estero Boulevard from the beach side to the bay side in the pedestrian crosswalk.
The couple was struck by a Dodge Grand Caravan that was traveling north on Estero Boulevard. The van was driven by 80-year-old Jimmie Imel of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Imel told investigators he was driving about 25 mph, saw the couple in the crosswalk but was unable to stop.
Both Robert and Ann Bandy were taken to the hospital. Ann, who was 76, died from her injuries Tuesday morning.
Robert, who is 82, remains in the hospital with serious injuries.
Imel has been cited for violation of a traffic control device -- that is, failure to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. However, the investigation is not finished.
Investigators are asking anyone that witnessed this accident to contact Corporal Leonard Gould at 239-477-1636 or the Lee County Sheriff's Office at 239-477-1000.
