Update: Police Arrest Teen Accused of Threatening MHS on Facebook

The teen is accused of inducing panic by stating on Facebook that he could have killed people at Mentor High School if he wanted to.

Though the department believes he posed no actual threat to Mentor High School, Mentor Police have arrested a teenager for a post about killing people on Facebook.

The 17-year-old was charged with inducing panic and taken to the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center on Monday, Mentor Police Sgt. Mike Majernik said. The male lives in Mentor, but it not enrolled in the school system. He takes courses online, Majernik said.

Students at Mentor High alerted administrators Monday morning about the threats that the 17-year-old posted on Facebook late Thursday. Majernik said the boy claimed that he could have killed people at Mentor High, but instead took his gun and shot it in a field.

"None of that is true," Majernik said. "He doesn't even own guns. We don't believe he posed a direct threat to Mentor High School or to anyone there."

The teen's hearing could be as soon as tomorrow afternoon.
