Willoughby Police say alcohol 'may be a factor' in Saturday morning crash

A Mentor man is in critical condition after his minivan crashed early Saturday morning on the eastbound lanes of State Route 2 near the Lost Nation Road exit in Willoughby.

Chandraka Kasabwala, 36, was in a Honda Odyssey when in went off the left side of the road and crashed into the median wall at 3 a.m., Willoughby Police Lt. Blaine Sweitzer said in a news release.

The minivan started spinning as it bounced back onto the road. It then went off the right side of the interstate and rolled over. The Odyssey landed upright but, during the crash, Kasabwala was thrown from the minivan.

Police do not know what caused the minivan to crash.

When officers arrived, Kasabwala was the only person by the minivan. But witnesses told police that another person ran away from the Honda after the crash.

Willoughby firefighters took Kasabwala to Lake West Medical Center in Willoughby. From there, he was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Kasabwala was in critical condition as of Saturday afternoon.

In the release, Sweitzer said alcohol “may be a factor” in the crash.

Police do not know if Kasabwala wore his seatbelt.

The Willoughby Police Traffic Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the crash and anyone with information that could help them is encouraged to call 440-953-4212.
