Mentor Firefighters Collect More than $7,800 Worth Of Food For The Needy

The food was given to the United Way of Lake County Friday, who will distribute it to local pantries

On Friday, firefighters from the Mentor Fire Department donated more than $7,800 worth to the United Way of Lake County.

The United Way will, in turn, distribute it to local pantries that need restocking.

Most of the money was collected during the firefighters' annual Feed The Needy Food Drive last December at Great Lakes Mall.

In the last 18 years, this food drive has collected more than $100,000 worth of food that has gone to families who need it.

Likewise, the United Way of Lake County will be kicking off its annual Feed Lake County Drive on March 1 at Great Lakes Mall.

Feed Lake County provides food to more than 6,000 people who use 52 food pantries across the county. Anyone who would like to conduct a food drive can call Gayle Sikula at 440-639-1082 or email her at GSikula@uwlc.org.

Last year, the United Way of Lake County collected more than 40,000 pounds of food and almost $60,000 to help feed the hungry in the county.
