Mentor Fire Uses Facebook Page To Reach Out To Community

The city's fire department offers safety tips, answers questions about the department online

Ever wondered why fire trucks are red? Or what happens when you try to deep fry a frozen turkey?

You can get the answers to those questions and more on Mentor Fire Department's Facebook page.

Mentor Fire Public Information Officer Nathan Peters said the department launched the page recently to reach more people with their safety tips.

However, the page has also given them a forum to answer questions from the public and provide tidbits about the department's history.

For example, Firefighter Jeremy Szydlowski recently posted an answer to the oft-asked question of why fire trucks are usually red. (Answer: Red paint was expensive so it gave certain fire departments bragging rights when they could afford to paint their truck that color.)

It also allows the fire department to share its safety tips in a creative way.

One more example: Instead of just telling people that it's dangerous to deep fry a frozen turkey, the department posted a video of what happens when you try it. (Hint: You won't want to eat what's left.)

The page has already accrued more than 1,000 likes, even though the department launched the site quietly about two months ago.

"It's been a nice outreach tool," Peters said.

"If people have questions for us, they can ask us on the page," he added. "We'll try to get you an answer. After all, if you're thinking that question, you know someone else is, also."
