Man Facing Abduction, Assault Charges After Fight With Girlfriend

A man faces criminal charges after a fight about if he could use his girlfriend's car turned violent, Mentor Police Lt. Tim Allen.

James L. Brown Jr., 29, of Painesville, was at his girlfriend's apartment in Mentor Tuesday when the argument began.

At some point, the argument became violent, Allen said. The woman told police that Brown grabbed her by the neck, threw her onto a bed, held her there, poured lotion on her, smacked her in the cheek with his hand and hit her in the forehead with his cell phone.

When the police talked to the woman, she was at Lake West Medical Center in Willoughby and she had red marks on her face.

The girlfriend said she repeatedly tried to leave the house but he would not let her; and, when she tried to call the police, he took the phone away, Allen said.

The next morning, Brown let the girlfriend escort her child to school bus. She then went to a neighbor, who took her to the hospital, Allen said.

When she finally returned to her home, she found her car and apartment keys had been taken, Allen said.

Painesville Police arrested Brown Thursday and he was charged with abduction, disrupting public services, assault and petty theft.

He was arraigned Thursday in . Judge John Trebets set Brown's bond at $115,000, which was not posted.

Brown's next court hearing is scheduled for May 17.
