Man Convicted Of Assault For Attacking His Sister With A Broken Plate

A Mentor man who is accused of hitting his girlfriend and then attacking his sister with a broken plate was convicted of misdemeanor charges of assault and domestic violence.

Jimmy Ward, 36, pleaded no contest to both charges earlier this week in Mentor Municipal Court, according to online court records.

Charges of disrupting public service and resisting arrest were dismissed.

Ward's sentencing is scheduled for April 3.

A "no contest" plea is when a suspect neither admits to nor disputes the charges against him or her.

Ward was arrested during the early morning hours of Dec. 30.

First, he attacked his girlfriend, Mentor Police said at the time of his arrest. Then his sister tried to stop him. So he became even angrier, broke a plate over his head and used one of the shards to cut her neck, police said.

Eventually, Ward ran away and the women called for help.

The firefighters treated the women's injuries while police looked for Ward.

K-9 Titan tracked Ward to where he was hiding, beneath a picnic table several yards away, according to police.

Ward refused to come out from beneath the picnic table so Titan bit him on the arm. Then Ward turned himself in.
