UPDATED: Son & Mother in Mentor Fire Listed in Critical Condition

The fire happened around 9:30 a.m. Sunday on Mentor Avenue.

Mentor firefighters put out a fire in a home in the 9100-block of Mentor Avenue that injured two of the home's occupants, reported our partners at WEWS News Channel 5.

A son and his mother were taken to Lake West Hospital and then were transferred to MetroHealth Medical Center, Mentor Fire Chief Richard Harvey told Channel 5. The department has not released their names yet, but on Monday morning said both were in critical condition.

According to a news release from the department, the man at the residence had already escaped the blaze when firefighters arrived at 9151 Mentor Ave. He said his mother was still inside.

Firefighters removed her within minutes, though she was unresponsive. Firefighters from Mentor, Willoughby, Concord, Painesville and Grand River responded to the fire. They arrived on scene at 9:47 a.m. and were transported the mother and son by 10 a.m.

The department estimates $10,000 worth of damage caused by the fire. Its cause is unknown and is under investigation by the Mentor Fire Investigation Unit, with help from Mentor Police and fire investigators from Willoughby and Eastlake.
