William Frieden was charged with unlawful transaction of a weapon

A man is accused of selling a handgun to a convicted felon.

William Frieden, 47, of Willoughby, was charged with a felony count of illegally selling a weapon and arraigned Wednesday in .

Previously, Frieden sold a .38-caliber Derringer to his nephew who lives in Mentor. The nephew has twice been convicted of felony drug trafficking, Mentor Police Lt. Tim Allen said.

Consequently, it is illegal for the nephew to own a gun or for anyone else to recklessly give or sell him one, Allen said.

In May, the nephew shot himself with the gun but he survived, Allen said.

Frieden turned himself into authorities Wednesday, was arraigned and released on a personal bond.
