All Strongsville-Owned Property to be Tobacco-Free Soon

The city is outlawing tobacco on all Strongsville-owned property, including parks and buildings — and even in your car in a city parking lot.

The new policy takes effect Oct. 1 and applies to smoking any type of cigarettes, cigars or pipes and also to chewing tobacco, the new policy says.

Lakewood Firefighters Rescue Three From Lake Erie

Lakewood firefighters saved three people from the choppy waters of Lake Erie on Sunday after a kayak overturned and a failed rescue attempt by two others.

No one was injured during the incident, except a firefighter who cut his hand during the dramatic rescue.

Woman Cited For Hitting 87-Year-Old Man on Bicycle

An Avon Lake woman was cited after hitting and critically injuring an 87-year-old man on a bicycle Sept. 3.

The woman, Carol O'Toole, 43, of Avon Lake was cited with failure to yield while turning onto a roadway, after pulling out of St. Joseph Church on Lake Road in Avon Lake.

George Rockas, 87, remains hospitalized at MetroHealth Medical Center.

Fairlawn Mayor Returns to China to Lure Businesses Here

Mayor Bill Roth is in China this week in his second business venture to try to attract businesses to northeast Ohio, Ohio.com reports.

Roth left Friday for a 10-day trip — his second this year. The mayor also went to China in February.

Bike Used by Escaped Missouri Convict Returned to Girl

In addition to Westlake and surrounding police departments' proving their prowess by safely catching Brian Adkison, 23, who escaped from a Missouri jail Aug. 11 and managed to freely travel to Ohio, the bike Adkison used was returned to its rightful Sept. 4.

Kent State Slides Further in U.S. News College Rankings

Kent State University has landed a coveted spot on the U.S. News and World Report's Best Colleges list for 2014 in the Best National Universities category, university officials announced Tuesday.

The university is listed at No. 201, which is a lower ranking than its previous two positions on the list in 2012 and 2011.

Stow Man Charged with Rape, Domestic Violence

A Stow man has been charged with rape, a first-degree felony, and domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor, by Stow Police.

Alder told police at the time of his arrest that he was employed by St. Thomas Hospital in Akron.

Mentor Students Wear Green in Honor of Michael Robinson

Mentor students gave up Cardinal red during the home game against St. Ignatius in favor of green shirts, bandanas and painted bodies in honor of No. 10 from a different team.

The school hosted a "green-out" during the matchup with St. Ignatius in memory of Michael Robinson, the 2013 Lake Catholic graduate whose body was found in his dorm at Ohio University.
