A Nation Reacts To The Colorado Shootings

The country from presidential candidates to police commissioners to local editors express their sadness

A nation is stunned after a heavily armed man entered a movie theater in Aurora, CO, early Friday and opened fire.

He killed at least 12 people and injured 50 others, including a 3-month-old child who was shot.

The attack occurred during midnight screenings of the new Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

The shooter, who police identified as James Holmes, also used a smoke or tear bomb to stun the audience before he started firing. Witnesses described scenes of pandemonium and chaos in the theater. Many in the theater did not realize what was happening even as the gunfire began.

Holmes, 24, was arrested soon after the melee. He is in police custody and the FBI says there is no indication that incident is tied to any terrorist groups.

The police originally announced that 14 people had been killed in the attack but revised the death toll earlier this morning.

Many across the country and globe are stunned by the mass shooting.

Both President Barack Obama and Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney have expressed their horror over the tragedy and their sadness for the victims.

"As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family. All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors," Obama said, according to the Associated Press.

A Northeast Ohio cinema said it is taking extra precautions in the wake of the shootings.

Some police departments, , are concerned about copycats and have reacted by increasing security around movie theaters.

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly issued the following statement Friday morning:

"As a precaution against copycats and to raise the comfort levels among movie patrons in the wake of the horrendous shooting in Colorado, the New York City Police Department is providing coverage at theaters where the 'The Dark Knight Rises' is playing in the five boroughs."

Meanwhile, people from across the country try to come to terms with the tragedy. , a local editor for Urbandale Patch, writes:

Will I ever feel safe in a movie theater again?

Sadly, I think we'll be horrified for a few days. Movie theaters will tighten security. Perhaps we'll have to go through metal detectors to get into them, as we do at airports. And we'll accept this as a fact of modern life.

I flew after 9-11. I sent my children to school after the Columbine school shootings -- .

She then muses if these examples of extreme gun violence will ever come to an end.

@ I.M. Wright, U. R. wrong. All I did was offer up a scenario, what if. Please do not call US morons, just because YOU would have run for the exits. That to me is ignorance, and self serving, but YOU knew that already. Look whose spewing now...
Pad Womack July 21, 2012 at 04:50 pm
@Earl
Have you ever had a gun pointed at you? I have. It's not exactly a moment of clarity. It's something you really can't be trained for. How can you be so certain that some random person with a CCW would have reacted properly? How can you be so certain they wouldn't have shot other innocent bystanders? @Steve You clearly know very little about the National Guard. They have units just like any other military organization who are trained to do specific jobs. You make out like every cook in the National Guard is riot trained and that is simply not true. P.S. You still haven't answered me.
lyn July 21, 2012 at 05:03 pm
Given the choice if I was in that theater, I would have preferred someone to have had a concealed gun. I'd rather take my chances with a semi or nonprofessional, than be a sitting duck. And, the person with the concealed weapon would have had the perfect opportunity to use his own weapon when that idiot was reloading
Are people forgetting Flight 93 that crashed on 9/11 near Shanksville? They risked and lost their lives to save others.
David Bly July 21, 2012 at 05:31 pm
Mr I.M. Wright Says "I don't see any 'anger' against CCW holders (perhaps you need to read things a little slower so you comprehend)". Was that comment made in Love or Anger? doesn't matter.. it appears your mind was made up all time ago. thats why you hide behind a false name.. and use that name to state your personal point.. It's a free country - your point is stated and might have some valid point, but is point less as you nor I was there. Lets agree to disagree and pray for the victims.. its about all we can do
Steve July 21, 2012 at 06:55 pm
@Pad, you want a reply! I will not compare my time spent in the military VS yours, althought you did bring up the cook issue, were you one? All wars are bad, get over it. But one thing I learned was to help my fellow boys, WE were a unit, is that simple enough for you? No good outcome is ever pointless as you stated. That was not an insane statement, that was a what / if? Get it yet!!! Learn to read and digest what was written, and be happy that there are people out their willing to risk their lives for the good of others.
Pad Womack July 21, 2012 at 07:26 pm
@Steve
For someone that doesn't want to compare service records you were certainly ready and willing to try and take a stab at mine. No, I wasn't a cook. I was a 4404 Combat Medic in the 10th Regiment where I served on the Advance Party for Romeo Battery. I'm quite capable of reading and digesting what I took in, but the issue here isn't my service record, my reading comprehension abilities or you trying to deflect and not answer my questions. The issue in this particular comment is that you seem to believe that a random person with a gun in a room full of tear gas and confusion would have somehow helped the situation rather than made it worse. As for pointless. This argument is entirely the definition of pointless. It is the result of a Gung Ho gun owner suggesting that more small arms fire in the midst of chaos would somehow have made things better rather than worse. I can see from your stubborn refusal to accept or address the facts of the situation that continued conversation with you on this point is going to be fruitless. I can only hope that someone else has the words which will convince you to examine the situation from a logical point of view rather than a Dirty Harry point of view.
Jessica Johnson Salamon July 21, 2012 at 07:26 pm
If you were reading anger against CCP holders or National Guard personnel in my posts, then you indeed need to reread. I never said anything disparaging about the National Guard and my comments were directed at a specific CCP holder with a hero fantasy. I'm done with this conversation now since it's spiraling quickly. Now we have the holy grail of 9/11 brought in, I expect the next step will be to compare someone to Hitler.
Tom Brennan July 21, 2012 at 09:04 pm
The whole situation is crazy. From multiple media reports, it appears as if this troubled young man was completely prepared himself. Full tactical/SWAT gear that would have provided a great deal of protection even if someone in the theater had a CCW weapon. How is it that any private individual can purchase the equipment necessary to outfit themselves as well as a member of a police department tactical unit? None of this makes any sense. Oh, any supposedly 6000 rounds of ammunition purchased online? What?
Jeff Mittiga July 21, 2012 at 09:08 pm
Our government needs to take some type of concerted action to lessen the level of violence in our society. The first thing that needs to be done is to restore the assault weapons ban that the US Congress allowed to expired in 2004. I cannot imagine what the legitimate needs for these weapons might be for a civilian. An AR-15 assault rifle is a weapon of war.
AMA July 21, 2012 at 09:51 pm
You can thank the NRA and the GOP for keeping all this violence with guns alive!
The NRA are hoping for a short term memory about this tragic event. If people don't get off their couches and vote out the lover of guns, we'll have more of the same for years to come. We, as a society, need to really DO something in order for anything to change. My condolences to all the victims and families. From one wacked person after another, going on killing sprees,we NEED REFORM!
Steve July 21, 2012 at 11:05 pm
@Anita--The NRA or the GOP had nothing to do with this killing spree by a very intelligent person, he could have used dynamite or grenades instead of guns. Just as easy to get or make. Want reform, automatic death sentence after being found guilty of crimes. No 20 and out bye the Judge, per the law. People play the system every day because they know they can get away with it. The only people getting off their couches right now are cleaning and loading their guns. that's reform. Stand your ground...be safe out there.
lyn July 21, 2012 at 11:23 pm
Anita-
Just yesterday, a deleted comment of yours on this very article included, word for word, the following "Very sad. And Tom, what does Politics have to do with this?".
AMA July 21, 2012 at 11:39 pm
Mass murderers are not thinking of political angles.
But we as a society, in order to keep these type of war like weapons out of the hands of citizens, need reform, don't ya think? We can only hope that when you or a family member goes out of the house, they will come back safe. The NRA are for limitless use and availability and the GOP back them, with a vengeance. Why would anyone in their right mind push for guns, war type weapons? A citizen has the right to bear arms but this is taken out of context to the extreme. A CCW holder is trained but it's the wackos who go on a rampage,as is very evident with all the mass murderers lately. Oh...LYN, thanks for having your spy glass out...to remember my deleted post word for word......really now!
Steve July 21, 2012 at 11:42 pm
@Pad- There is no Dirty Harry here, and it was never insinuated as such, and it was you who brought up the cooks. And I did answer you, but YOU refuse to read my comments in full. Here is a comment for you, as a medic, you patch them up, me, I brought them out of harms way, whatever it took, to get them to you. No need to reply.
lyn July 21, 2012 at 11:50 pm
Anita-
However, I do agree with most of what you said!
AMA July 21, 2012 at 11:54 pm
LYN...thanks, and I was teasing you about the spy glass! LOL
The problem with posting, it's hard to relay the spirit in which the words are intended. Enjoy the evening. =>}
Steve July 21, 2012 at 11:57 pm
Anita, you just don't get it. You are bringing politics into this disaster, fueling the fire against the NRA and GOP, which clearly had nothing to do with this. So only 'WACKOS' should have arms? I know many high powered Dem's that carry arms and support those that do in a respective way. More people will be killed by cars than crazys with guns, so should we ban cars???? Thats politics.
AMA July 22, 2012 at 12:35 am
Politics did not even come to mind of the wacko.
The tragedy had nothing to do with politics. I believe it does have a lot to do with the availability of weapons that get into the hands of wackos. In order to reform the laws we have to bring politics into play. Stopping access of dangerous weapons is the message.
Ed Fisher July 22, 2012 at 01:10 am
"The first thing you have to do is disarm the people. A disarmed public can't fight back" -- Adolf Hitler. And if that not good enough for you: The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." - Thomas Jefferson. The nut-case in Colorado killed those people. The firearms were just the tools he used. Get off your gun control hysteria and concentrate on dealing with the criminals who have guns, not the guns themselves.
Debbie S. July 22, 2012 at 01:52 am
I don't disagree with you, Ed. But in this case, it appears (so far) that this guy had no criminal record. If that proves to be the case, and all his weapons and ammo were legally obtained, then he was no criminal until he walked in and pulled the trigger and I am left wondering how this guy could have been stopped.
Steve July 22, 2012 at 02:08 am
@Debbie- You will never be able to stop all the crazys that are intent on taking lives. But this makes a good case for swifter penalties for those that do, and get caught red handed, only to be locked up and supported by taxpayers like us. Give him the same justice he gave those innocents, and it's not being locked up or 10 years on death row with appeal after appeal after appeal.
Debbie S. July 22, 2012 at 02:23 am
@Steve - I think justice needs to be swift for *everyone* and our appellate system needs to be allowed to run its course (although admittedly, this particular case seems pretty clear cut on its face). This is one of those cases where it's awfully hard to oppose the death penalty, given the heinous nature of the crime committed, but I still do prefer to let God do the ultimate judging. (Oh boy - here come the nasty retorts to my stance, I'm sure. But let's please remember that we all have a right to our own opinions and to disagree!)
Nelly July 22, 2012 at 07:37 am
Jessica, I don't wanna be that guy. However just so you are aware police don't carry weapons to protect you, they carry them to protect themselves, and many civilians DO shoot better than the police
Ed Fisher July 22, 2012 at 01:47 pm
Maybe there were signs that could have been seen. Maybe not. But when people are bent on doing harm, for whatever twisted reason, they're going to succeed. I don't see how to prevent this sort of thing from happening over and over. The best we can do is recognize that these perpetrators have no value in society, nor will they ever be redeemed or rehabilitated. Put them down. Swiftly and without delay.
Valerie Paul July 30, 2012 at 01:05 pm
I think that these types of guns only belong in hands of the military. The only reason a civilian would buy would be for the purpose of hunting 'people' and not deer. Don't ban all guns; but ban the assault weapons
Ed Fisher July 30, 2012 at 01:41 pm
Valerie, The "assault rifles" that are sold (and the one used in Colorado) are just look-alike rifles. These are not the same as the fully automatic weapons used by police and military. They're just styled to mimic real assault rifles. Fully automatic "machine gun" weapons are not available to private citizens without Federal permit.
jiim may August 5, 2012 at 03:39 am
why shoot harmless deer. i have a bushmaster ar-15 assult rifle with green dot laser scope.
MZ August 10, 2012 at 01:44 pm
Steve you are right. It is always better to take a stand. There are so many people who are afraid to stand up and be counted, to stand up and fight. I would much rather try something and fail, then try nothing and hope for the best.
MZ August 10, 2012 at 01:54 pm
Timothy McVeigh didn't use an assault weapon. We should ban fertilizer. The 911 hijackers didn't use an assault weapon. We should ban box cutters.
There are already hundreds of gun laws, laws against murder, theft, etc... Laws do not stop the lawless. There are evil people in this world. It is sad, but true. If someone is hell bent on killing someone, or many, they will find a way to try even if the assault weapon was never invented.
MZ August 10, 2012 at 03:49 pm
There are over 70 million gun owners that killed no one yesterday. To fight for your life and the life of your loved ones is not a super human trait. It’s your duty!
