It was an exciting night - that is for sure! Saturday night the Mentor Cardinals took on the Raiders of Shaker Heights. After regulation time the score was still 0-0. Two 15 minute sudden death overtimes produced no scores. On to Penalty Kicks. As the mother of the goalie I was freaking out. But I should have had more faith. Matt Markiewicz, Senior Goalkeeper, made two amazing saves in the first and third round of PKs and Tim Noll, Kurt Raney, Colin Eedy all made their conversions with Jake Lombardo sealing the deal with the 4th PK Conversion. Mentor wins 1-0! District Champs for the first time since 2007!
This was just icing on the cake that is their undefeated season. The Cardinals are now 15-0-4 overall and 3-0 in the playoffs. On to the Regional Semi-Final at Revere High School Wednesday at 7 pm vs St. Edward who beat St. Ignatius in a PK shootout.
Matt Markiewicz put it best in the News-Herald Online game recap when he said "It's amazing. Starting off this year, I had no idea we'd be here undefeated going into regional play. It's crazy.!"
