Firefighters keep learning through programs at Lakeland

September is National Preparedness Month

Lakeland is known for educating many of our area's emergency responders such as police officers and firefighters. But just because they graduate doesn't mean that learning stops. In fact, many professionals come back to campus to update skills and stay on top of industry trends and changes.

That's where Lakeland's Continuing Education department comes in.

Two courses designed for local firefighters' continuing education are now available:

Cultural Diversity for Firefighters (3 Hours)
The positive impact of our public servants on the ever-changing multicultural communities they serve cannot be underestimated. This course will help to develop and expand the students' knowledge of cultural diversity. Cleveland Officer Jeffrey Stanczyk, who was named Police Officer of the Year for 2011, will be the instructor. This course will be held on Friday, September 13, from 9 a.m. - noon.

Interview Techniques for Suspicious Fires (4 Hours)
This course will cover legal aspects of interview and interrogation. We will also learn proven techniques and methods to use in the criminal investigation after a suspicious fire. The instructor will review SB 77 and how it applies to interviewing in the state of Ohio. Detective Edward Zigman, a certified master criminal investigator by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, will be the instructor. Course will be held Monday, October 14, 2013 from 8 a.m. - noon.
