Want to Turn Your Job Search Around?

Being laid off myself in 2001, I quickly found during my transition that a lot of so called “career/job search experts” were providing very poor advice to job seekers.  I ultimately used the skills accumulated during my 25 years as a hiring manager to find another opportunity.  In the nearly 12 years since that time, I’ve made it a point to “pay it forward” and do what I am able to assist others in transition.

To that end, I’ve been speaking to job seekers groups and corporate outplacement firms throughout northeast Ohio for almost 10 years on a variety of job search related topics.

For nearly three years, I’ve been writing a blog for job seekers, called, “In the Business of You”, as a means to provide objective, actionable advice – from a hiring manager’s perspective.  Currently being read by thousands of people in over 25 countries around the world, this blog covers topics that include everything from building a strong job search team and developing a powerful resume to tips for effective networking and interviewing in such a way that you can clearly separate yourself from other candidates.

With unemployment still high, it is quite common for there to be anywhere from 100 to 300 resumes received by an employer per job opening (I know of a large company in Lake County that receives an average of nearly 1,000 resumes per day), thus it remains a “buyer’s market” and hiring managers continue to be very picky about the candidate ultimately selected.

In addition to the large supply of talent in transition, the job seeking landscape has changed so dramatically over the last several years that it looks nothing like it did even 10 – 15 years ago…let alone if you have just been laid off after working at the same job for the last 20 – 25 years!  What worked when you landed your first job is of little value today.

The concepts in this blog will provide you with tools and methodologies that really work (I’ve assisted over 1,000 people over just the last 4 ½ years with their resumes and job search strategies, resulting in over 95% of them being re-employed).

Ultimately, the candidate selected by the hiring manager is the one who has done the best job of presenting themselves as being that person having the (perceived) preferred mix of skills, competencies, experience and “fit”.

Would that be you..?
