Prom Season - Express Yourself!

Sewing your own prom dress can give you the opportunity to show your unique style. Isn't that the ultimate goal for young ladies?

Santana: You’re up for Queen. You can’t make your own prom dress. Prom is like our Oscars. It’s seriously like the most important night of our lives.

Lauren: What about getting married?

Quinn: Oh, you can get married as many times as you want. You only have one shot at your junior prom.

I was pleasantly surprised by this week's episode of Glee. The dresses were adorable! But I have to disagree with Santana who insinuates that a handmade prom dress could never be red-carpet worthy.

Just take a look at local student Sarah Lottes' dress from last year. Not only did Sarah make her dress, but she won $50,000 from Joann's "Own Your Look" Prom Contest. She certainly created a one-of-a-kind runway look!

Sewing your own prom dress can give you the opportunity to show your unique style. Isn't that the ultimate goal for young ladies? (And we all know that prom is about the ladies! From the nails, jewelry and makeup to the shoes and hair; boys, you are just one more accessory.)

It has been a tradition for me to sew my daughter's formal dresses for dances and concerts. She likes it because she can create a look that she wants. Also, because sewing is my hobby, the expense falls into my sewing budget and she doesn't have to pay! I like sewing her dress because it gives me some control over the style and fit.

You don't have to sew to create a one-of-a-kind look. You may have seen Duck Tape dresses on tv.  Check out this contest to see some of the amazing creations made with Duck Tape. If Duct Tape isn't your thing, head to your friend's closet or a local thrift shop. Not only can thrift shop finds be, well, "thrifty", they can also give you a base from which you can upcycle or alter to create a new dress. Try cutting off the sleeves, adding fabric flowers, or changing the length of the dress.

We can't completely dismiss the boys. Most will probably not choose to make a kilt like Glee's Kurt. But you could sew a dashing vest and bow tie to wear with a tux.   The major pattern companies sell vest and tie patterns. Or check out BurdaStyle for hip patterns, many of which are free!

Take advantage of the exciting prom season and your fashion sense to express your uniqueness!
