Shedding light about a "Skerry" book

Lakeland film and English Professor Emeritus, Philip Skerry, Ph.D., will hold a free presentation about his latest book, “Dark Energy, Hitchcock’s Absolute Camera and the Physics of Cinematic Spacetime,” on Wednesday, October 30, from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Lakeland Library, 7700 Clocktower Drive, Kirtland, 44094, C building, third floor.

Skerry’s latest Hitchcock endeavor explores scientific theories, especially physics, as metaphors to understand the director’s “pure cinema.” “I found some intriguing parallels between Einstein and Hitchcock,” said Skerry. “This book is not only for Hitchcock scholars but also, for readers who are curious about the mysterious world of theoretical physics.”

The book applies the theories of dark energy, entropy, black holes, and quantum mechanics to Hitchcock’s technological genius and camera aesthetics.

Skerry is also the author of the only book written about only one scene in a movie. “The Shower Scene in Hitchcock’s Psycho: Creating Cinematic Suspense and Terror (The Edwin Mellen Press, 2005), which examines the importance of “Psycho’s” shower scene as a defining moment in the cinematic genre. He also authored “Psycho in the Shower: The History of Cinema’s Most Famous Scene (Continuum Press, 2009) and numerous articles for scholarly journals.

“Dark Energy, Hitchcock’s Absolute Camera and the Physics of Cinematic Spacetime” is available in bookstores or from Bloomsbury Press (Bloomsbury.com) and from Amazon (Amazon.com).
