Presidential Dinner, Quilts & Fish Fry: A Weekend Planner

1. ST. GABRIEL FISH FRY
Where/When: The Catholic Community of St. Gabriel, 5 p.m. tonight.
Why go: The parish will open its doors for a Lenten fish fry with all-you-can-eat fare. The menu that includes hand-breaded walleye, baked and battered cod, breaded shrimp and crab cakes. For those who aren't fond of seafood, the church will also offer pizza and meatless pasta, along with an array of sides. A takeout menu is also available. The church will host fish fry events for the next five Fridays.

Pricing: $12.50 for adults; $5.50 for children, ages 6 to 12; and free for children 5 and under.

Where/When: Great Lakes Mall, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, near the Justice store.
Why go: This storytelling event will feature special guests like Mentor Police Chief Kevin Knight, firefighter Nathan Peters and the Chick-fil-A mascot reading books that highlight their profession. Each Simon Kidgits Club member gets a make-your-own library book bag and can participate in activities like a decorate-a-notebook craft and bookmark craft.

3. QUILTS 2013
Where/When: Lake Metroparks Farmpark, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday-Monday.
Why go: Quilts 2013 is billed as one of the state's best quilt shows, with more than 200 works on display. The story behind each quilt, the creator and judging information will be displayed next to each piece. In its 22nd year, Quilts features three Mentor artists: Jan Mazzone, Monique Noonan and Susan Plautz.
Pricing: People can see Quilts 2013 for the price of regular admission — ages 12 through 59: $6; ages 60 and older: $5; ages 2 through 11: $4; children younger than 2: free.
4. AFRICAN-AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN THE CIVIL WAR
Where/when: James A. Garfield National Historic Site, 1 p.m. Saturday, in the visitor's center auditorium.
Why go: This Black History Month event will discuss the crucial role African-Americans played in the Union’s struggle in the Civil War. Bertram Floyd and other members of the 5th U.S. Colored Troops Civil War reenacting unit will present a program entitled “The Life and Times of the Black Soldier in the American Civil War.”
Pricing: Free
5. DINNER WITH THE PRESIDENTS
Where/when: Yours Truly, 5:30 p.m., Monday (President's Day)
Why go: Children and their parents can come se President and Mrs. James A. Garfield, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and President George Washington during this President's Day event. The Mentor Library will provide books for children and attendees can participate in presidential trivia.
Pricing: Free, though people can order from the regular menu. No reservations necessary.
