State Champions, Talking Art & Language Olympics: Week In Review

See some of the biggest stories this week on Mentor Patch

1. How about those Cardinals?

While the Mentor High boys basketball team had the most conspicuous victory this week -- winning the state championship will do that -- several local kids accomplished some praise-worthy things.

But -- before we get them -- allow me to ask again, how about those Cards?

2. The Cardinals may be state champs but even they haven't beated the Broadmoor Bobcats.

The Bobcats ended their season and maintained their 12-year undefeated streak by beating an opposing team comprised of local coaches.

3. It wasn't all basketball this week.

Rice Elementary held its annual Talking Art Museum on Tuesday.

For the past few weeks, the fourth graders have worked in groups of three or four researching an artist, painting one of his or her better known works and also writing an essay about him or her.

On the day of the art show, students from the group took turns dressing up as either the artist or the work of art.

You can see a slideshow from the museum here.

4. The Spanish, French, German, Latin -- and, for the first time, Chinese Mandarin -- students of Lake Catholic High School competed in their annual Language Olympics Tuesday.

The language clubs formed teams that played in dodgeball, speedball and tug-of-war tournaments. They also demonstrated their linguistic acumen with vocabulary, translation and cultural quizzes.

Additionally, the students cooked dishes from the land of their respective languages' origin, which the teachers ranked.

The Language Olympics began in 1988 and have grown more elaborate each year. The students make their own team T-shirts and study hard to win linguistic bragging rights.

. (By the way, congratulations to the German Club for their victory.)

5. Sadly, not all the news can be pleasant.

A Mentor-on-the-Lake man was sentenced to 21 years and 10 months in prison Monday in the U.S. Northern Ohio District Court.

Kevin Davis, 47, had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of child pornography and another charge of distributing it on the Internet.

Judge Christopher Boyko also Davis -- should he ever be released from prison -- will spend another five years under supervision after he gets out.

Davis was already a registered sex offender before this latest conviction.

Find out about his criminal history here.
