Record Breakers & Graduates: A Week in Review

These are the biggest stories from Mentor this week.

1. routinely rolls out winning sports teams, and track and field is no exception.

Boys and girls from Mentor High School's track and field teams in the Div. I regional track tournament. The girls made their way to the competition in Youngstown by winning a district championship. The boys came in second behind Glenville, with a record-setting performance in the 1600 m by senior Blake Lewis.

2. Data released this week showed that Mentor has unemployment rates in the state.

The city's jobless rate dipped to 5.6 percent in April, down from 6 percent in March. Mentor has the second lowest unemployment rate of any city in Ohio with more than 50,000 residents. The figure is also close to a three-year low of 5.3 percent in October and November 2011.

3. Katie Spotz began the week by announcing that her Schools for Water program raised for the Blue Planet Network, a supporter of clean-water projects around globe. By the end of the week, she hosted a celebration for the students and teachers of the 10 area schools who supported her efforts to provide drinkable water to Kenya.

With 474 participants, the students and teachers for the most people walking with water bottles on their heads.

4. Speaking of records, the Mentor quarterback who broke plenty last season has announced his next destination.

Junior Mitch Trubisky to play for the University of North Carolina in 2013. Though Ohio State and Alabama both pursued the Cardinal, Trubisky said UNC offered the best combination of academics and athletics.

"He's done everything he can to prepare himself for this situation," Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno said of his star player.

5. One can't help but be touched by the enthusiasm a group of graduate displayed this week.

Mentor preschoolers sang and waved flags in front of proud parents at their graduation ceremony. Watch a video clip .
