Pinewood Derbies, Coyote Hunting & Epilepsy Walks: A Weekend Planner

Where/When: Mentor Public Library main branch, 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday)

Why Go: The professionals from Gander Mountain return to the library with another seminar on wildlife.

This time, the focus is on coyote hunting techniques, strategies and hands-on equipment demonstrations.

This superwary, intelligent predator is difficult to hunt so improve the chances of success by attending this seminar by expert hunters.

The event is free. However, people need to register before Friday either online or by calling the library at 440-255-8811.

2. EIGHTH ANNUAL EPILEPSY WINTER WALK

Where/When: Great Lakes Mall, Saturday morning

Why Go: The purpose of Winter Walk is to raise awareness for those who suffer from Epilepsy and money for their treatment.

People can support the walk and Epilepsy research in two ways. They can either start a team of walkers and collect pledges or donate to an already existing team.

People can register up through the morning of the walk. However, the sooner you do it, the more time you have to raise donations.

Pricing: The cost to register is $30 and that includes entry into the event for an adult and up to 4 children, an event T-shirt, complementary breakfast(s), access to all vendor tables and 10 raffle tickets.

This registration fee also goes towards your overall fundraising goal.

3. CUB SCOUT PINEWOOD DERBY

Where/When: Great Lakes Mall, 1 p.m. Sunday

Why Go: Also at the Great Lakes Mall, the Pinewood Derby returns this Sunday.

Local scouts compete to see who made the fastest and coolest-looking racers.

The Derby is a lot of fun, even if you don't have a kid in the race.

Pricing: Free

4. SPC SPORTS SOFTBALL LEAGUE SNOWBALL TOURNAMENT

Where/When: Mentor High School, Saturday

Why Go: The SPC Sports Softball League is holding the second of two "snowball" tournaments at Mentor High School.

This one is coed. It is a one day, double elimination, one-pitch adult softball tournaments.

Each team entry costs $250.

All proceeds from the tournaments will be donated to CancerCare, including donations by the teams and umpires.

Teams who are interested in playing in either tournament can email David Godshall at sidewinding34@gmail.com.

Pricing: $250 per team

5. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY BREAKFAST

Where/When: Lake County YMCA (933 Mentor Ave, Painesville, OH), 8 a.m. Monday

Why Go: The Lake County Central Y is hosting a breakfast to celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All proceeds of the breakfast will benefit the Y Minority Achievers.

The Y Minority Achievers program encourages all youth to pursue higher education and career goals by offering them a jumpstart on their future through leadership, college fairs/tours, tutoring, life skills seminars, job shadowing, and community service. Students from Lake Catholic, Perry, Riverside and Thomas Harvey High School are involved in the program.

Pricing: Tickets are $5 per person and kids under 6 are free. Table sponsorships are still available for $50/half table and $100/full table. Contact the Central Y at 440-352-3303 for more details.
