Schools, Roads Affected by High Winds

Gusts of wind could reach as high as 55 mph this morning; FirstEnergy says that more than 2,000 buildings are without power in Mentor

The National Weather Service has issued a wind warning for most of the northern half of the state.

The worst of it is predicted to hit the western half of the state, where wind gusts are expected to hit 60 mph or even higher, but locally the wind is still expected to blow between 29 and 34 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

The National Weather Service warned that winds of this speed could knock down trees or power lines.

In Mentor, dispatchers say wind already felled trees near the intersection of Kittery Lane and Adkins Road, as well as Crossfield Drive and Midland Road.

The intersection at Center Street and Route 84 is also closed this morning because of the wind.

Meanwhile, FirstEnergy estimated that between 2,000 and 5,000 buildings are without power in Mentor as of 6:30 a.m.

is one of those buildings without power. It is closed today.

Similarly, is closed today. It initially announced it would open with a two-hour delay because of a morning power outage. However, school was cancelled after the power company could not give an estimate as to when electricity would be restored.

The winds are expected to die down by 10 a.m. this morning.

Forecasters are also saying rain and thunderstorms are possible today, though they are not expecting more than a quarter of an inch of rain.
