Mentor Library Welcomes Different Kind Of Tea Party

Library encourages literacy by hosting American Girl Tea Party

All the girls who came to the Mentor Public Library's main branch Saturday had their favorite American Girls doll in tow.

Fifty children and their parents brought their favorite dolls and a tea cup to the event.

"We hosted the party to encourage literacy and to help students grow through reading," said Librarian Kim Sidorick. "The program provided history and diversity through general activities based on the American Girl book series."

Ten-year-old Erinn Slotta said Julie, an American girl doll representing the 1970s, was her favorite because they both like basketball.

"I also like the historical books because they are so realistic and could happen," she said.

Children created their own journals and period fans, as well as miniature fans for their dolls. Cucumber and peanut butter sandwiches were served with their tea at a table decorated in the era of a particular American Girl doll

The children had an opportunity to win prizes by playing a trivia game with questions about the books. At the end of the party, each child received a party favor consisting of a paper doll and clothes.

Ella Biondi, 8, was one of the trivia game winners.

“I like to read all of the American Girl books,” she said.

Ella’s mother, Michelle, said she enjoyed the party.

"It is nice to know that there are family-friendly activities offered," she said. "It was a nice way to spend a few hours with my 8-year-old daughter."
