Mentor Honors Victims of Boston Marathon Explosions

About 100 runners and supporters from the area paid tribute to those affected by the tragedy in Boston

Some walked, others ran, but every person came to Mentor High School Tuesday night to honor Boston.

About 100 runners from Mentor and beyond attended a candlelight vigil to pay tribute to the three lives and 170-plus injures that followed explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

The staff at Second Sole in Mentor organized the event Tuesday after an employee read that the Boston Athletic Association was encouraging groups across the country to pay tribute to the victims by lighting candles, saying prayers and running a mile. Store owner Bill Dennison quickly got approval from Mentor Schools to hold the event.

"I just think, as a running community, this is awesome," said Dennison, who is also a track and field coach at Mentor. "Everybody's like, 'how did you get all these people together so quickly,' but they're runners — it's easy."

Aside from individuals, the Mentor Fire Department, city council and Riverside High School in Painesville were among the entitites represented at the vigil. Three candles were lit in honor of the deceased.
