Memorial Middle School Headed to National Science Olympiad

This is the first time a middle school in the district will participate in the national competition

A Mentor middle school is heading to the National Science Olympiad for the first time in district history.

The Memorial Middle School team claimed a runner-up title over the weekend at the state competition at The Ohio State University. After beating out other Ohio teams in events like Disease Detectives, Awesome Aquifers and Sumo Bots, Memorial will advance to the two-day national competition beginning May 17 at Wright State University in Dayton.

According to the district website, the other Mentor schools competed in Columbus. Here's how they finished:

  • Mentor High School placed third in the high school division.
  • Shore Middle School finished sixth in the middle school division.
  • Ridge Middle School placed 18th.

Memorial will compete against more than 6,800 teams in Dayton. The team will host a bus tour, visiting Fairfax, Hopkins and Garfield elementary schools along with a pep rally on Friday May 10.

The district also invites the community to send the team off to Dayton at the Memorial parking lot on Thursday May 16.
