This battle -- one of the most brutal of the war -- was actually a series of six fights fought in late June and early July 1862 around the Confederate capitol of Richmond, VA.

The Confederates succeeded in forcing the Union away from Richmond but at the expense of more than 20,000 casualties. Meanwhile, the Union lost about 16,000 of their own.

"The Seven Days’ Battles saw some of the early Civil War’s most brutal fighting," said Todd Arrington, the chief of education at the national park.

"This program will address the circumstances that led to these clashes and the impacts these engagements had on the war in both the short and long terms."

The monthly Civil War series will continue August 8 with a program that focuses on the Battle of Manassas.

The joint series coincides with the park's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

All of the talks are free and open to the public. However, those interested should register beforehand. They can do so on the library's website or by calling 440-255-8811.
