Garfield National Historic Site Commemorates Constitution Day With Event

The Mentor home of President James A. Garfield celebrates the 225th anniversary of the Constitution's signing

The U.S. Constitution turns 225 years old on Monday.

To commemorate this anniversary, in Mentor has a special event planned for today.

At 1 p.m., the park will host a program entitled “James A. Garfield and the Constitution.”

Site volunteer Andrew Mizsak, who teaches high school government, will explore the history of the Constitution and explore how it impacted Garfield’s careers as a college teacher and president, soldier, lawyer, congressman, and president.

The program is open to the public and will also contain a component geared toward Boy Scouts seeking their Citizenship in the Nation merit badge.

There is no charge to attend this program.

“The Constitution is our foundational document,” said Todd Arrington, the park's chief of education. “The 225th anniversary is a very appropriate time to both celebrate our nation’s citizenship provisions and learn more about the ways in which the Constitution affected the career of James A. Garfield.”

The site also hosted a on Friday to coincide with Constitution Day.
