Dr. Seuss Fans Flock To Mentor Public Library For Birthday Celebration

Families decorated hats, fished for blue fish and, of course, read Seuss-pendous books to celebrate the good doctor's birthday

The Mentor Public Library celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday with more than 200 of his young fans, Cats in Hats, Loraxes, Grinches and big-hearted moose on March 1 and 2.

Dr. Seuss has proven to be a generation-spanning author. Both the children who attended the Seuss-pendous celebration and their parents were his fans.

“Dr. Seuss was my mom’s favorite children’s author and it was my favorite,” said Carolyn Brazis, who attended the library event with her 5-year-old daughter Casey. “I can still recite his work.”

Casey said her favorite Dr. Seuss book was “Green Eggs and Ham.”

“It is about a boy who never had (green eggs and ham),” she said. “But then he tried it and he liked it. We don’t have (green eggs and ham). I think it would be disgusting.”

MPL Children’s Services Manager Kim Sidorick said the children also created crazy hats to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Seuss' “500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins.”

“Some of the kids were as creative as Dr. Seuss himself,” she said.

Kids also played a fishing game to see if they could nab one fish, two fish, a red fish or a blue fish.

Most importantly, library staff also set up a display of several Dr. Seuss books for families to choose and read their favorite book.

At 12 years old, Kirk Brauer still reads Dr. Seuss books, but now he reads to his 16-month-old brother Bo.

“I have read ‘Cat in the Hat’ and ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ to him,” he said. “Dr. Seuss books are poetic but funny. It is nice that I can share these books with him.”
